Operation Flags for Vets

LOCATION: Massachusetts National Cemetery
Operation Flags for Vets will again be placing flags on the graves at the Massachusetts National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts for Memorial Day. We are looking for volunteers to help with this worthy and solemn endeavor. People of all ages are welcomed to help in the placement of the 66,000 flags on the final resting place of our beloved veterans.

American Legion Post 188 Memorial Day Parade

Stopping to place wreaths on several veteran memorials, with ceremonies to follow in front of Sandwich Public Library. State Representative Randy Hunt is the keynote speaker. Barnstable’s Annual Memorial Day Parade

DATE: Monday, May 29, 10AM
LOCATION: Begins at the Centerville Library
To proceed down Main Street to Monument Square for a brief program then up Old Stage Road to Beechwood Cemetery for the main program. This year’s Keynote Speaker 1ST Lieutenant Glen Beasley served in Vietnam and Cambodia as a Combat Platoon Leader with the 2nd Bn. / 8th Calvary, First Cavalry Division. The public is invited to bring pictures with them to the event of a family member, friend or acquaintance who has passed away and was a veteran. The parade will not reform but streets will remain blocked to allow safe foot traffic back to the Library.

John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

LOCATION: John F. Kennedy Memorial on Ocean Street
The annual Ceremony will celebrate the centennial of John F. Kennedy’s birth. Assisting the John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee will be a group of Cub Scouts from Pack 54, the Barnstable Police Department Honor Guard and other special guests. It is at this ceremony that the 2017 JFK Memorial Trust Fund Scholarship will be awarded to this year’s recipient, a 2017 Barnstable High School Graduate.

Bicycle Club and Group Ride

DATE: Friday May 26, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM 
LOCATION: Brooks Park, Oak Street, Harwich (by the tennis courts)
A group bike ride leaving Brooks Park on Oak Street (next to Monomoy Regional High School) at 1:00 p.m. We are calling this weekly ride "Bicycle Club", and it's geared toward people who maybe haven't been on a bicycle in a while. It's a "no-drop ride", which means nobody gets left behind! The ride is open to anyone with a working bicycle and a helmet. We are hoping younger riders join older riders for a ride along the beautiful Cape Cod Rail Trail and Old Colony Rail Trail.

Celebrates the significant role the Kennedy¹s played in shaping the history of Hyannis and Cape Cod. The 1.6 mile trail consists of 10 informational signs that are placed at key locations from Main Street to the harbor, finishing up at the JFK Memorial at Veteran¹s Beach Each stop provides a brief history of the site and its significance to the Kennedy¹s and their life on Cape Cod. Visitors along the trail can retrieve additional information by accessing the QR code or dialing the number on each sign. This is a new group beginning to knit for a purpose. Some yarn and straight needles have already been donated for our use. Bring yarn, needles and join us for a relaxed supportive afternoon of services. For our first project, please bring a skein of purple yarn, needles, and your favorite pattern and we will make a hat to donate to an Alzheimer’s organization. Tuesday Wildflower Garden Walks

There are over 300 plants in the one-third acre that comprises the garden, which consists naturally of three zones: shaded hillside, wetlands and sunny meadow. Seventh Annual SandwichFest

This year's street festival will be held on Water Street (Route 130) stretching from Town Hall Square to the Hoxie House. Approximately 75 Juried Arts and Crafts, food and local non-profit organizations will take part in the event. The "Best Sandwich in Sandwich" tent will be located at the Hoxie House along with a "Beer and Wine Garden".
